Each year on January 13, OJJDP commemorates National AMBER Alert Awareness Day to honor Amber Hagerman's memory and increase awareness around child abductions. The AMBER Alert program was created as a legacy to 9-year-old Amber, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas, and then brutally murdered.
The AMBER Alert program and the AMBER Alert in Indian Country Initiative are vital tools, helping law enforcement agencies and communities to safely recover missing and abducted children nationwide.
As of the end of 2024, the AMBER Alert program had successfully recovered 1,221 children; another 195 were rescued due to wireless emergency alerts. In fiscal year 2024, OJJDP awarded $2 million to the National AMBER Alert Training and Technical Assistance Program.
