Data from the 2013 National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) show the percentage of youth (younger than 18 years old) who were victims of violence by type of offense, the offense profile of youth victims of domestic violence, as well as data on victims' gender and race, victimization location, and offender relationship to the victim.

Abstract

In 2013, 16 percent of victims of violence ( 1 of every 6 victims) were youth. Percentages of youth victims by type of violence were intimidation, 12 percent; aggravated assault, 12 percent; simple assault, 50 percent; rape, 6 percent; sodomy, 2 percent; sexual assault with object, 1 percent; fondling, 1 percent; and other violence, 6 percent. "Other violence" percentage includes murder, kidnapping, and robbery. In 2013, 14 percent ( 1 of every 7) of the victims of domestic violence were youth. Percentages of youth victims of domestic violence by type of offense were intimidation, 10 percent; aggravated assault, 11 percent; simple assault, 52 percent; rape, 6 percent; sodomy, 3 percent; fondling ,14 percent; sexual assault with an object, 1 percent; and other violence, 3 percent. "Other violence" includes murder, kidnapping, and robbery. For youth victims of violence, 54 percent were victimized at home and about 1 in 6 were victimized at school; 45 percent were victimized by an acquaintance; 54 percent of assault victims were male; 79 percent sex-offense victims were female; and 64 percent of youth violence victims were white. Of youth victims of domestic violence in 2013, 85 percent were victimized at home; 50 percent were victimized by a parent; 47 percent of assault victims were male; 79 percent of sex-offense victims were female; and 68 percent were white youth. 4 figures
