Abstract

Two OJJDP-sponsored conferences pertained to the protection of children. The 2006 AMBER Alert Conference (July 17-21, 2006) addressed issues important to Native Americans, as tribes explored implementing AMBER Alert in Indian Country. The 18th Annual Crimes Against Children Conference (August 21-24, 2006) addressed computer-related crimes against children. The 11th Annual Conference on Disproportionate Minority Contact (September 7-10, 2006) focused on law enforcement approaches for reducing racial disparity and disproportionately high rates of minority youths' contact with the juvenile justice system. On September 17-20, 2006, OJJDP co-sponsored a conference that addressed issues in juvenile probation and justice management, including dispositional alternatives, mental health issues in juvenile justice, and case management of juvenile sex offenders. The work of OJJDP's Permanency Planning for Children Department is briefly mentioned. It works with judges, jurisdictions, and communities nationwide in order to implement best practices and improve outcomes for abused and neglected children and their families. The Juvenile Court Data Archive is briefly profiled. It houses the automated records of cases handled by courts with juvenile jurisdiction. The provisions of the recently signed Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act are outlined. The provisions focus on protecting children from sexual predators. Information is provided on OJJDP-sponsored upcoming training events for law enforcement and juvenile justice professionals. Recent news and updates are provided on OJJDP funding, recent awards, new publications, and staff activities.
