The newsletter consists of 10 articles which report on the following: testimony given by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Administrator J. Robert Flores before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary regarding reauthorization of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Act (JJDP Act); the November 2007 Fifth Regional Conference of Helping America’s Youth (HAY), in Dallas, TX, where both First Lady Bush and OJJDP Administrator Flores addressed the participants; the American Society of Criminology’s (ASC’s) annual meeting which took place November 2007 in Atlanta, GA the October 2007 OJJDP and Hamilton Fish Institute’s Conference on School and Community Violence sponsored by the National Conference on Safe Schools and Communities in Washington, DC, and which focused on bullying prevention, mentoring, program evaluation, and community programs; the 2007 National Youth Court Conference held December in New Orleans, LA, which assisted jurisdictions in developing, implementing, and enhancing effective youth court programs; the Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) Conference on Reducing Disproportionate Minority Contact in Juvenile Justice by Making The Right Connections held in October 2007 in Denver, CO; OJJDP’s Fiscal Year 2007 awards of more than $383 million in formula, block, and discretionary grants which support State and community efforts to prevent and respond to delinquency and child victimization; an announcement of a new publication called the Juvenile Court Statistics, 2003-2004 which describes delinquency cases handled between 1985 and 2004, and petitioned status offense cases handled between 1995 and 2004 by U.S. Courts with juvenile jurisdiction; the new OJJDP Web site design; the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention which met in December 2007, and where presentations were heard regarding child welfare and the juvenile justice system; and the Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice (FACJJ) meeting in October 2007 where matters of juveniles activities were discussed.
