This manual for interviewers selected to work on the Second National Incidence of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children Household Survey (NISMART-2) describes procedures for completing each task of the interviewing assignment.
Abstract
The manual indicates that the responsibility of the interviewer includes making sure that each respondent hears the questions exactly as they appear on the interviewer's computer screen. The interviewer is also responsible for entering responses that accurately reflect what the respondent said. The information obtained and recorded in an interview must be accurate and complete to ensure the validity of the survey. One chapter discusses the rules for determining an eligible respondent for the Primary Questionnaire and provides the specifications for enumerating the children who live in the household. Other chapters describe the other sections of the questionnaire. The Episode Screener follows the Child Roster. If any "missing child" episodes are identified in the Episode Screener, the appropriate Follow-up Questionnaires will be used next by the interviewer. To finish the Adult Interview, Adult Demographics are collected. The final section of the interview is the Youth Interview, which will only be used if there is currently at least one child age 10 to 18 living in the household. Detailed procedures are described for each of these interviewer tasks. Also discussed are the ethics of interviews and the handling of the information, as well as how to deal with various situations that might arise in the course of conducting an interview. Fourteen appendixes contain supplementary information and step-by-step procedures for various tasks not covered in the body of the manual.
