Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $445,248)
The Enhancements for Juvenile Defense program supports states and localities in developing and implementing tools and strategies to ensure that youth involved with the juvenile justice system have fair and equal access to high-quality legal representation and to resources that address the collateral consequences of justice system involvement.
The Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC) proposes to create a Juvenile Defender Division responsible for administering three project goals: (1) identify and address the needs and service gaps among juvenile public defenders, (2) expand juvenile defender capacity across all circuits in the State of Georgia through shared information resources, and (3) improve the quality of representation through professional development and network building. The project will identify patterns of practice in juvenile defense across public defender offices and assess the use of resources in a strategic effort to maximize effective legal representation for juvenile clients.
