Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $680,391)
This program will promote and expand services in detention and correctional facilities to incarcerated individuals and their minor children younger than age 18, and provide services to children of incarcerated parents by facilitating access to services that support their needs. This program will provide states and localities with funding to implement positive family engagement strategies and activities that address the needs of incarcerated parents and their minor children.
The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center will use funding to improve services for 200 incarcerated parents and 400 youth over 3 years by using evidence-based strategies, activities, and curriculums that foster positive family engagement, reduce violence, and ensure safety within law enforcement facilities, with a 90-percent program completion rate (parents and youth) annually. Bernalillo County intends to achieve outcomes targeting an improvement in family measures of stability, parent capabilities, safety of all family members, and family membersÂ’ physical and mental health; and improvement in child well-being through better relationships with family members, positive developmental growth, school readiness, and a safe home environment.
