Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $396,077)
The Juvenile Drug Treatment Court Program builds the capacity of states, state and local courts, units of local government, and federally recognized tribal governments to enhance existing drug courts or implement new juvenile drug treatment courts (JDTCs) for individuals with substance abuse problems or co-occurring mental health disorders, including histories of trauma. Under Category 2, Juvenile Drug Treatment Court Enhancement grants are available to jurisdictions with a fully operational (for at least 1 year) juvenile drug treatment court to enhance the operation of the court.
The New York State Unified Court System proposes to enhance its Suffolk County Family Court JDTC program. The project will increase the court's capacity to serve youth and families by implementing evidence-based strategies and targeted resources. The program will hire a full-time coordinator to evaluate each participant's risk/need level using a validated assessment tool, improve immediacy of access to evidence-based treatment interventions, and provide guidance for therapeutic judicial oversight in alignment with the JDTC model.
