Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $698,315)

This program promotes and expands services in detention and correctional facilities to incarcerated individuals who have children younger than age 18, and provides states and localities with funding to implement positive family engagement strategies and activities that address the needs of incarcerated parents with minor children. This program is authorized under the Department of Justice Appropriations Act, 2018, Pub. L. No. 115-141.

The County of Miami-Dade will use funds to provide a broad multidisciplinary solution that will address the needs of incarcerated parents, support pro-social child development, and ultimately, prevent violent crimes against law enforcement within the facilities and within the larger community. The goals of this program focus on expanding critical services to support incarcerated parents, providing positive family engagement strategies that promote civic responsibility and deliver re-entry programming that results in transformational opportunities that improve safety within facilities and reduce recidivism in the community.
