Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $665,621)

This program promotes and expands services in detention and correctional facilities to incarcerated individuals who have children younger than age 18, and provides states and localities with funding to implement positive family engagement strategies and activities that address the needs of incarcerated parents with minor children. This program is authorized under the Department of Justice Appropriations Act, 2018, Pub. L. No. 115-141.

The Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP) will use funding to reduce the impact of incarceration on children, families and communities by strengthening the relationships between justice system-involved parents and their minor children. GOCCP will implement a program that: 1) utilizes an evidence-based, cognitive behavioral parent management skills, Parenting Inside Out that was created for incarcerated parents; 2) utilizes evidence-based practices to strengthen the relationships between incarcerated parents and their children; and 3) provides reentry and transitional services to incarcerated parents and their children that focus on family interactions, communications, problem-solving, parenting skills, and pro-social activities.
