Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $393,873)
The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act and funds are made available as a result of the FY 2016 Department of Justice appropriations. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Program areas may include: planning and administration; state advisory group allocation; compliance monitoring; prevention; and activities to address the core requirements and improvement of juvenile justice system operations and policies, as found in section 223(a)(9) of the JJDP Act.
Arkansas has identified a number of priorities to be undertaken in the state's three year plan ranging from less reliance on residential care to better communication with stakeholders. Arkansas and the State Advisory Group will work to develop ways to promote the implementation of evidence-based and effective programming while fostering initiatives that will further the juvenile justice reform efforts in the state through system improvement, compliance monitoring,and capacity building activities. DYS will focus on the following priority areas: school programs; reentry and aftercare; alternatives to detention; and disproportionate minority contact (DMC) in addition to building capacities for compliance monitoring.
