Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $621,069)

The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act and funds are made available as a result of the FY 2016 Department of Justice appropriations. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Program areas may include: planning and administration; state advisory group allocation; compliance monitoring; prevention; and activities to address the core requirements and improvement of juvenile justice system operations and policies, as found in section 223(a)(9) of the JJDP Act.

For the FY16 Title II Formula grant program, the Colorado Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Council has prioritized and will support compliance with the JJDP Act core requirements of Disproportionate Minority Contact and Compliance Monitoring to include providing training, technical assistance and monitoring for these areas. In addition, Indian Tribe programming and Juvenile Justice System Improvement (JJSI) have been prioritized. An important concern is that Colorado youth with low risk of criminal offending but high needs for behavioral services, along with their families, are entering the juvenile justice system to receive services even though Colorado has a plethora of initiatives to address the needs of children, youth and families. Colorado's JJDP Council will place its attention and resources on system improvement in six main areas to assist in meeting the needs of Low Risk but High Need youth and other youth involved in the juvenile justice system.
