This award will support the provision of training and technical assistance to tribal grantees and federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes. This program furthers the Department's mission by providing culturally appropriate training, support, resources, information, and other related technical assistance around tribal youth needs and issues.
The Center will provide culturally, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate training, technical assistance, resources, and information to OJJDP funded tribal grantees and federally recognized tribes (FRT) across the United States, supporting OJJDP in strengthening tribal relations toward implementation of the Tribal Law and Order Act and fulfilling the recommendations from the Tribal Law and Order Commission and Defending Childhood Initiative. The proposed Center will build opportunities, in partnership with OJJDP, to address the current challenges and needs of tribal communities to develop, expand, improve, and/or maintain juvenile justice systems; through targeted and broad-based training and technical assistance, supporting best practices in policy, programming, and evaluation.
Using both upstream and downstream approaches, the Center will target three primary audiences. 1) Targeted training and technical assistance will directly support OJJDP tribal grantees in meeting unique developmental needs for OJJDP grant programming and improvement, including support in Tribal Action Plans 2) Broad training and technical assistance opportunities will be provided to all tribes to support wide-spread dissemination of best practices in juvenile justice prevention and intervention. 3) Training provided to OJJDP and related leadership, policy-makers, and workforce on topics related to trauma-informed care, while supporting OJJDP in implementing the Tribal Law and Order Act, in coordination with federal partners and tribes.
