Congress passed the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) in 2003 with unanimous support from both parties. Congress intended that PREA would provide for the analysis of the incidence and effects of prison rape in Federal, State, and local institutions and to provide information, resources, recommendations, and funding to protect individuals from prison rape.
The Kansas Department of Corrections Juvenile Services (KDOC-JS) will increase supervision and monitoring of youth and staff in three buildings located at one of its juvenile correctional facilities (JCF) that will now house youth and staff through video monitoring.
Cameras, port switches and transceivers will be purchased to enhance the safety of youth in newly opened buildings located at the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex (KJCC). This purchase will aid in closing an identified gap in the staffing analysis completed by the administration at KJCC and will move the facility one step closer to full compliance with National PREA Standard §115.313 Supervision and monitoring October 2017.
