Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $400,000)

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP) Juvenile Indigent Defense National Clearinghouse supports the improvement of juvenile indigent defense across the nation. It provides a broad range of activities and services to improve the overall level of systemic advocacy, improve the quality of juvenile indigent defense representation, and ensure professional and ongoing technical support to the juvenile indigent defense bar. The goal of the Juvenile Indigent Defense National Clearinghouse is to improve juvenile indigent defense, build capacity of the juvenile indigent defense bar, and promote zealous and effective advocacy for juvenile indigent defendants.

The National Juvenile Defenders Center will work collaboratively with OJJDP, to: 1) provide juvenile defense counsel with customized technical assistance support that is responsive to varying levels of specific need at the local, state, regional, and national level; 2) provide juvenile defense counsel with professional development and training opportunities; 3) provide juvenile defense counsel with publications and resources designed to improve juvenile indigent defense and system effectiveness; and 4) provide juvenile defenders with opportunities to take leadership in policy development and systemic reform.
