The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements through a range of administration, compliance and program activities including those that address juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes.
The New Mexico Children Youth and Families Department (CYFD) will use FY 14 Title II Formula Grant, along with state grant funds, to support the ongoing compliance monitoring and Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) activities as required by the OJJDP JJDPA. Additionally, the CYFD will further develop community programs focusing on diversion, alternatives to detention, and evidence-based/model programing. The New Mexico juvenile delinquency prevention service spectrum is primarily executed and delivered through the Continuum Site model established in sites in 21 counties. The objective of these continuum sites is to provide outreach, education, and services to youth at-risk of involvement with the juvenile justice system as well as their families. As described in New Mexico statute, the target population is juveniles arrested or referred to juvenile probation and parole or who are at risk of such referral. Services to be provided include substance abuse prevention and education, family and parenting education, assessments and case management, mentoring, academic skills enhancement, day reporting programs, gender specific services, restorative justice programs and other alternatives to detention programming. On an ongoing basis, services will be added or modified depending on identified gaps and needs as indicated by data drawn from the statewide data system. NCA/NCF
