Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $4,031,966)

The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements through a range of administration, compliance and program activities including those that address juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes.

The California Board of State and Community Corrections in conjunction with the State's Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (SACJJDP) will use FY 14 Formula funds to serve at-risk and system-involved youth through both direct services and systems improvement/reform. The SACJJDP will continue its work to transform juvenile justice toward: (1) reduced reliance on juvenile confinement; (2) increased use of evidence-based practices and interventions; and (3) reducing disparities in the decision-making processes that impact youth of color and have resulted in disproportionate minority contact. The state's 3-Year Plan will continue to support these three focus areas with subgrants aimed at several goals: Reducing the number of youth held in secure detention; improving the quality of delinquency representation through the public defense system; enhancing services for Californias Native American youth; and supporting victims, returning offenders to law-abiding lives; and repairing harm through restorative justice services and approaches.
