Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $23,414)
The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Program areas may include: planning and administration; state advisory group allocation; compliance monitoring; disproportionate minority contact; juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes; prevention of substance abuse by juveniles; prevention of serious and violent crimes by juveniles; prevention of juvenile gang involvement and illegal youth gang activities; prevention of delinquent acts and identification of youth at risk of delinquency; and improvement of juvenile justice system operations, policies, and procedures including establishing a system of graduated sanctions, treatment programs, and aftercare.
Wyoming is a non-participating state. This award supports the Wyoming State Advisory Group (SAGJJ). The SACJJ works in collaboration with other state and local governments and community agencies to strengthen Wyoming's juvenile justice system, and to provide vision, training and support for a model Juvenile Justice System in Wyoming.
The SACJJ members recognize that a major part of its core business is to approve the award of funds and provide ongoing oversight to the juvenile justice grants that are administered through the Department of Family Services. To be effective in this role, the Council continually engages in a coordinated planning process that impacts local and statewide juvenile justice policy, informs and improves practice, fosters the development of model programs, and defines consistent philosophies for how to address the needs of children in Wyoming's juvenile justice system.
