FY 2013 Title II Formula Grant

The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Program areas may include: planning and administration; state advisory group allocation; compliance monitoring; disproportionate minority contact; juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes; prevention of substance abuse by juveniles; prevention of serious and violent crimes by juveniles; prevention of juvenile gang involvement and illegal youth gang activities; prevention of delinquent acts and identification of youth at risk of delinquency; and improvement of juvenile justice system operations, policies, and procedures including establishing a system of graduated sanctions, treatment programs, and aftercare.

The OJJDP FY 2013 Title II Formula Grants Program in the State of South Carolina is administered by South Carolina Department of Public Safety. The State Advisory Group awards grants to local units of government, non-profits, and faith-based organizations to implement evidenced-based model programming intended to impact priority juvenile justice needs. Funds will be allocated to new projects and continuation projects that will address the following purpose areas:
- 6 Compliance Monitoring
- 8 Deinstitutionalization of Status Offenders
- 10 Disproportionate Minority Contact
- 17 Jail Removal

Specifically, the State will focus their efforts on regaining compliance with DSO and Jail Removal core requirements of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA). To achieve the program's goals and objectives, the State-level activities will focus on implementing system improvements designed to upgrade court technology and data collection methods for processing juvenile case information on a real-time basis, and on monitoring the State's jail facilities to ensure compliance with the core requirements of the JJDPA so as to address issues of noncompliance where and when they arise.
