The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements through a range of administration, compliance and program activities including those that address juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes.
The Mississippi Division of Public Safety Planning will use FY 2014 Title II Formula funds to provide grants to local units of government, non-profits, and faith-based organizations to implement evidenced-based model programming intended to impact priority juvenile justice needs. The State of Mississippi's primary focus is to address alternatives to detention and diversion. Mississippi has a great need for alternatives but few resources to implement alternative programs. Title II funds will assist in the planning, establishing, operating, coordinating, and evaluating of projects directly or through sub grants or subcontracts with public and private agencies. The main goal is to develop more effective education, training, research, prevention, diversion, treatment, and rehabilitation and to improve the State's juvenile justice system in alignment with its 2012-2014 Three Year Comprehensive State Plan.
