Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $400,000)

The American Institutes for Research (AIR) and The National Crittenton Foundation (TNCF) propose to serve as the OJJDP National Girls Institute (NGI) Training and Technical Assistance provider and resource clearinghouse. Under the cooperative agreement, AIR and TNCF will provide training and technical assistance to improve the job performance of individuals and service delivery systems of states, tribes, communities, and organizations working with at-risk and delinquent girls and their families. These activities will include the delivery of high-quality, proactive, and responsive training and technical assistance and collaboration with researchers and program developers to advance the understanding and application of promising and evidence-based prevention, intervention, treatment, and aftercare programs and services for at risk and juvenile justice involved girls. In this way, NGI will build on the stated goals and objectives of OJJDP. AIR and TNCF have identified four young women with former involvement in the juvenile justice system to work with them in shaping the work of NGI.
AIR and TNCF will work collaboratively with OJJDP to plan all training, technical assistance, and resource development activities, as well as to identify and respond to emerging needs from girls in the juvenile justice system. Technology has made it possible to communicate through web-based instructions, communities of practice, blogs and other tools which expand the reach of the center.
AIR and TNCF, through NGI, will implement a comprehensive data-informed approach that will guide the continuous quality improvement of all services provided under this cooperative agreement. Additionally, data collected on the training and technical assistance needs of the field will be shared with OJJDP and used to inform strategic decisions about allocation of federal resources, potential for collaboration with other OJJDP Training and Technical Assistance Centers, and resource maximization to support the improvement of girls' delinquency prevention programming.
