Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $20,000)

At the direction of President Obama, the Departments of Justice and Education launched the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention (Forum) to begin a national conversation concerning youth and gang violence, raise awareness, and elevate the issue to national significance. This program aims to competitively select as many as four new sites to join the Forum's participating localities of Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Salinas, and San Jose. The FY 2012 National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention Expansion Project is authorized by the Department of Justice Authorization Act, 2012, Pub. L. No. 112-55, 125 Stat. 552, 617.

Violence in New Orleans is epidemic; the city's murder rate is ten times the national average. New Orleans' youth are vulnerable to becoming victims or perpetrators of violence, with elevated exposure to a range of risk factors for violence. With the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention, New Orleans will develop a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative youth violence reduction plan: the New Orleans Youth Violence Prevention Team. The Team's goals are to: 1) engage youth, parents, and community stakeholders in planning a comprehensive youth violence prevention plan; 2) collaborate with community partners and other city agencies to improve health department programs in domestic violence and community violence and trauma response; 3) collaborate with the NOPD, the Office of Criminal Justice Coordination, local school systems, and community partners and providers to expand the implementation of evidence-based programs; and 4) coordinate effective interagency communication and information sharing. Progress toward goals will be measured by ongoing collection of data and outcome measures, which will be used to evaluate initiatives and inform planning. With the support of this grant, New Orleans will have a roadmap for durable, long-term youth violence reduction that bridges disciplines and approaches and is guided by the community and youth themselves.CA/NCF
