This demonstration program supports collaborations of qualified, established mentoring program sites that enhance (1) the matching of youth and mentors based on needs, skills, experiences, and interests; (2) initial and ongoing training for mentors, and (3) ongoing mentor support. The program aims to improve the effectiveness of mentoring through the systematic implementation of advocacy or teaching functions into mentors' roles. This program is authorized by the Department of Justice Appropriations Act, 2012, Pub. L. No. 112-55, 125 Stat. 552,617.

This mentoring enhancement partnership will focus on youth between ages 11-15 in the metro Denver area at risk of developing serious problem behaviors. The Leadership/implementation team will: (1)develop common questions for questionnaire and 1:1 interview to assess mentor and mentee interests, skills, and needs; (2) implement a risk and protective factor survey and implement True Colors and Introversion/Extroversion Scale; (3)design new training for the program; (4)research and contract with training professionals as necessary to ensure that training meets desired goals; (5)ensure that training is evaluated and revised as needed; and (6) determine elements desired for the on-line mentor resource.

The partners and the independent evaluator will fully co-operate with OJJDP evaluation. The individual sites include Aurora Youth Options (three years mentoring); Byrne Urban Scholars (17 years mentoring); and Goodwill Industries (more than 10 years mentoring).
