OJJDP's State and Community Development Awards program was established to provide grants and cooperative agreements to organizations that OJJDP has selected for funds in prior years. This program has been authorized by an Act appropriating funds for the Department of Justice.
The Attorney General's Children Exposed to Violence Demonstration Program will develop and support comprehensive community-based strategic planning and implementation efforts to prevent and reduce the impact of children's exposure to violence in their homes, schools, and communities. The project's purpose is to continue to coordinate, develop enhance and expand on the Defending Childhood Initiative project with a goal of reducing Childrens Exposure to Violence and responding to Children Exposed to Violence utilizing a community based approach to install the Lakota Mental Health Concept and ensure it is integrated into the social fabric. The Lakota Mental Health Concept provides integrates cultural ceremonies of Wopakinte and Nagi Kicopi (Calling the Spirit Back) which are traditional ceremonies which heal traumatized individuals and families and strengthens them physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe will use FY14 State and Community Development Invited Award funds to continue to coordinate, develop, enhance and expand the Defending Childhood Initiative project. Project goals are to reduce Children's Exposure to Violence and respond to Children Exposed to Violence utilizing a culturally informed, community based approach to install the Lakota Mental Health Concept and ensure that it is integrated into the social fabric.
