Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $400,000)
OJJDP's Demonstration Programs Division Grants were established to provide grants, cooperative agreements, and other assistance to organizations. This program is authorized by the Department of Defense and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2011, Pub. L. 112-110.
The Council of State Government (CSG) Justice Center will convene a series of meetings of more than 100 leaders of the relevant systems and determine what policies, programs, and practices they agree would be most likely to improve outcomes for students who engage in misconduct in school. To achieve this goal, CSG Justice Center has identified five objectives: 1) identify and assemble key stakeholders and national opinion leaders in the area of school discipline; 2) summarize relevant research; 3) determine what practitioners, system administrators, and advocates believe, based on their experience, would improve outcomes for youth misbehaving in school; 4) identify examples where communities, local and state governments have implemented programs, practices, or policies that are consistent with what the research demonstrates and/or practitioners believe is effective; and 5) prepare and disseminate a report that captures policy and practice recommendations that reflect a bipartisan consensus. This series of meetings will yield a comprehensive report that is grounded in research, highlight places employing promising approaches, and reflects an unprecedented consensus on what constitutes effective school discipline and positions the field to translate these recommendations into policy and practice.
