Reducing Underage Drinking in Washington State

OJJDP's State and Community Development Awards program was established to provide grants and cooperative agreements to organizations that OJJDP has selected for funds in prior years. This program has been authorized by an Act appropriating funds for the Department of Justice.

One component of the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Program is to support and enhance State efforts, in cooperation with local jurisdictions, to enforce laws prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages, or the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors. For the purpose of the program, minors are defined as individuals under 21 years of age.

Washington State will support a Law Enforcement Partnerships project and an initiative implemented through the College Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention to support information delivery and alcohol problem-screening with persons enrolled in a college or university. The Law Enforcement Partnerships project initiative is aimed at developing cooperation between community coalitions and law enforcement for underage drinking law enforcement. Law enforcement from five Prevention Redesign Initiative communities will be trained to implement alcohol purchase surveys, alcohol compliance checks and to do alcohol source investigations in cooperation with the PRI community coalition. This project will provide funding support to the College Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention for professional development training around substance abuse for college students services professionals.
