Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $200,000)

The OJJDP FY 09 Earmarks Programs further the Department's mission by providing grants, cooperative agreements, and other assistance authorized by the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974, as amended, to organizations identified in the Explanatory Statement Regarding H.R. 1105 (Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009), 155 Cong. Rec. H1653 (daily ed. Feb. 23, 2009) (statement by Rep. Obey, Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations of the House).

The Self Reliance Foundation (SRF) proposes to conduct a six-month Hispanic gang participation prevention and public education media campaign to reduce the rate of youth gang participation. The goal of the project is to reduce youth gang involvement through greater parental participation in the prevention of youth gangs. The project also aims to increase parental intervention at early stages of at-risk behavior. Goal two aims to build understanding on how Hispanic parents view youth gang involvement and what role parents can play in keeping their children out of gangs. The campaign will focus on reaching parents and will leverage media, outreach to inform, educate and motivate Hispanic families on the importance of avoiding gang life. Campaign materials will be available in Spanish. SRF will coordinate with Identity to research at-risk Hispanic families; develop, disseminate, and evaluate media products, including TV, radio, and media relations.
