Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $400,000)

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California plans to provide community-based, prevention services to impact risk factors for delinquency in at least 80 juveniles aged 10-18 years annually. The program seeks to prevent and control juvenile delinquency in Washoe Tribal youth by identifying and addressing poor academic performance including truancy/dropouts through the implementation of the Washoe Native Youth Resource Services (WNYRS ' pronounced 'winners') Program. Program goals include: changing the attitudes of parents and youth regarding the importance of education and their relationships with educational personnel; reducing truancy, improving graduation rates, decreasing school dropouts; improving the collaboration and cooperation of all Washoe youth services programs through a centralized staff initiative and hiring of a Tribal Youth Program Manager. The tribe will report on the mandatory OJJDP Tribal Youth Program performance measures. CA/NCF
