Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $670,761)

The Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) will implement VIVA, a Hispanic volunteer recruitment and development model, at five Girl Scout councils in the State of Florida. The project goals include improving the capacity of the five councils (Tropical Florida, Broward, West Central, Citrus and Gulf Coast) to recruit, train, and retain Hispanic volunteers and to increase Hispanic girl and adult membership. GSUSA will: develop a volunteer management system; ensure that Hispanic girls have access to volunteers who understand and relate to their cultural backgrounds; and train Hispanic adults in all aspects of girl scouting. The training will equip the adults to provide direct services to girls, encourage them to become stakeholders, motivate them to serve as board members, and encourage Hispanic volunteers to cultivate their local communities to become grassroots advocates for girl scouting.
