Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $200,000)

The Chelsea/Revere Gang Intervention Assistance Program (C/R GIAP) is designed to promote public safety through collaborative intervention strategies with police, juvenile justice, and the community. Given the strong infrastructure for primary and secondary prevention, the focus of this program will be both gang intervention and systems improvement. The project will identify and intervene with 100 to 150 high-risk, delinquent, status offenders and systems-involved young people, ages 14-18, over two years. The project will provide intervention services that include: 1) engaging each young person in transformational relationships; 2) providing young people with life skills, educational and employment programming; 3) demonstrating positive behavior changes related to decreasing high risk behaviors; and 4) increasing participation in restorative justice practices. At the same time, C/R GIAP will improve coordinated community and systemic capacity for intervention strategies and practices with high risk young people through: the engagement of institutional partners; the development of a framework for effective intervention practices; the coordination of intervention efforts; and training of staff involved in intervention activities.
