Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $189,421)

The City of Norwalk proposes to provide the strong, intentional coordination the community needs in order for prevention efforts to be maximally effective. The applicant will base their gang prevention efforts in the Department of Youth Services, Norwalk's Youth Service Bureau, (YSB). The project proposes to focus on Primary Prevention, Secondary Prevention and Intervention with high-risk youth. The Juvenile Review Board (JRB) operated by the Youth Service Bureau will be expanded and offer a cross'disciplinary team of youth service providers to divert 100 offenders from the juvenile justice system, and provide team members with information on the needs of such youth and the services available to them. That knowledge will enhance providers' ability to address the needs of the population at risk for gang involvement. Other key program objectives and activities include providing scholarships to summer activities for 100 vulnerable youth; police presence at critical locations, implementing a gang tracking software system at the Police Department, and working with the U.S. Attorney's Office.
