Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $40,000,000)

Through this project, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) will strengthen, expand and enhance programs and mentoring experiences for approximately 70,000 current and new Club members in four specific goal areas: mentoring implementation; new Clubs in distressed areas; targeted outreach initiatives; and sustainability support for Clubs in public housing and Indian Country. Priority will be given to delivering the enhanced programs and experiences to underserved, high-risk youth residing in distressed areas, as identified by the OJJDP SMART tool. Programmatic emphasis will be given to addressing the existing mentor shortage of African-American and Latino males through targeted mentor (both professional and volunteer) recruitment, training and site-based supervision and oversight. Performance measures appropriate for the individual programs will be selected from those provided for this solicitation and will be collected and reported utilizing the BGCA's newly developed online performance measures reporting system. Boys & Girls Clubs receiving this funding will be charged to develop and provide via their applications comprehensive mentoring program development plans, and will utilize the OJJDP Helping America's Youth community resources website to identify and access appropriate collaborative partners and other resources. Programs and mentoring experiences implemented will achieve specific performance goals and measures, including improved academic, social and career performance, as well as behavioral and personal development.
