Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)
The primary purpose of the Sports Foundation, Inc. [SFI] 2008-09 positive alternative program, 'The Passport to Success', is to develop good health habits and build strong bodies and strong minds in the participants, and delay [as long as possible] the age of first participation in harmful antisocial behavior by youth. It is designed to continue building on the successful SFI 'Mind of the Child' Model, and to provide strong quantifiable positive alternative activities utilizing risk & protective prevention/intervention strategies that have been identified by the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services [OASAS] to be effective science-based youth development techniques. The ultimate goal is to prevent and reduce delinquent behavior and victimization, and address the national problems of obesity, physical fitness/lack of physical education in schools, and to provide early intervention and case management, in the lives of 48 targeted middle school aged boys & girls.
