Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)
Youth in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn face many challenges to positive youth development and academic and vocational success. These include an array of community stress factors such as: high poverty, family dysfunction, drug and alcohol abuse, underperforming schools, low high school graduation rates, high rates of crime and reliance on public assistance.
The Police Athletic League proposes to operate a Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Teen Center for 50 teens at the PAL Miccio center located at 110 West 9th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231. The curriculum was designed using evidenced-based best practices for Leadership and Youth Development programs. It recognizes and builds the strengths of youth to prevent them from being affected by societal factors that put them at risk for juvenile delinquency, truancy, high school drop out and substance abuse. It also gives youth a productive place to go to prevent crime victimization. NCA/NCF
