Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $223,587)

Service Over Self (SOS) provides youth in Georgetown County, South Carolina vast opportunities for community service through programs designed to promote leadership development, character education, and smart decision-making. In partnership with the Georgetown County School District (GCSD) through its Safe School-Healthy Youth Collaborative Connection, the project will encourage young people to engage in positive outlets in a safe atmosphere where they feel free to be themselves and develop into outstanding young citizens in the process. The goal is to excite young people for service and train leaders for tomorrow. The success of the evidence based, best practices components will be measured through surveys and performance based measures including academic success, dropout rates, and behavioral indicators.
