Tilles Center for the Performing Arts Department of Arts Education will utilize funds from the Department of Justice to work with K-12 students in economically disadvantaged school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties in New York State. This prevention/intervention program will address issues of social violence and discrimination by involving students in artist-in-residence programs, workshops and performances. Through participation in arts activities, our goal is to increase student engagement in the classroom and to decrease truancy levels. Progress will be assessed by faculty of C.W. Post/Long Island University's School of Education's guidance, curriculum and instruction departments. K-12 students who have been labeled as 'at risk' for school failure to due to poor grades, truancy or behavioral issues will be tracked and assessed by education professionals, noting the differences in attendance and engagement before, during and after arts activities.
