This project seeks to serve approximately 1,000 who youth reside in Harlem and are between the ages of six and 18. The objective is to discourage youth from participating in risky and juvenile delinquent behaviors, specifically, gang affiliation, and drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. Abyssinian Development Corporation (ABC) engages participants in youth development, academic enrichment, sports and recreation programming to combat the documented damaging socioeconomic conditions affecting Harlem. OJP funds will support the implementation of the ADC Youth Leadership Corps programming and services over a two-year period, enabling youth to participate in positive activities through which they will experience personal growth and development, improve academic performance, increase exposure to new activities, engage in regular physical activities, and facilitate healthy relationships with adults and peers. These activities are intended to combat the causes of risky and delinquent behaviors. ADC will measure progress toward goals through: attendance at and full participation in programming; demonstrated positive peer interaction; demonstrated positive relations with parents, caregivers and other adults; academic performance, including school attendance and grades; and demonstrated refusal skills.
