Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

Alianza's Juvenile Delinquency Prevention program seeks to reach at-risk youth in the neighborhoods of Washington Heights and Inwood in Northern Manhattan in New York City and provide them with educational, recreational and hopeful alternatives. The program will sponsor college trips, offer SAT instruction, daily tutoring, organized team sport opportunities, chess and arts and crafts instruction. At a time when youth are tempted to engage increasingly in risky and dangerous behaviors and are barraged with violent images, educational and developmental programs such as those offered through this program encourage hope and open up positive opportunities for young people.
