Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $223,587)
There is a profound lack of resources for children and families residing in the Overtown community, one of Miami's poorest neighborhoods. The community is prevalent with risk factors including that of 1 out of every 12 students graduates from high school. With these startling statistics the Overtown Youth Center (OYC) works diligently to provide comprehensive services to youth and families within the community. This project seeks to expand, enhance and provide additional educational opportunities and options to the students. Services include: annual College Tours, participation in the Pace University Summer Scholars Program, performances/showcases, incentives and exposure opportunities. By coupling these services with the academic assistance and
enrichment services already provided, the OYC will better serve students by meeting their academic, social, emotional and physical needs. Project progress will be measured through grade point averages, expulsions, and school and OYC attendance records. NCA/NCF
