Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $22,340)

The City of Dawson's Youth Advocacy Program seeks to increase police and community support in dealing with at-risk youths' population in Terrell County. Primary activities will be centered on offering classes to at-risk youths, their parents, and other community leaders in order to curtail the youth crime rate and improve their academic success rate. We seek to serve approximately 200 youth, parents, and community members over a one year period. Progress of the program will be measured by the number of people attending the class over the three year period. Classes will be offered five days a week, approximately 48 weeks a year. We will conduct on-going tracking in order to determine the progress of the kids involved in our program. This will also give us an idea of how successful the program is. The program will also give the police department an opportunity to interact with youth, parents, and community leaders in a non-adversarial environment. The program will be offered to young people in the 5th through the 12th grade. NCA/NCF
