Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $61,000)
Elysian Valley United will operate the Community Scholars program in an effort to improve the low matriculation and high school graduation rates in Northeast Los Angeles. Elysian Valley United plans to use OJJDP funding to transform the Elysian Valley United Community Services Center from a family education center that focuses primarily on high school graduation, to a center that provides additional services to increase college matriculation, retention and graduation. Community Scholars will enlist the collaboration of the local high schools, area colleges and universities as well as businesses and community leaders in an effort to promote college matriculation and graduation. Elysian Valley United will offer every high school student in the community individualized college and career planning. In addition, Community Scholars will enroll at least 30 neighborhood students in each secondary grade level from Marshall and Central High Schools in a college preparation and public service program. The program will also engage 30 community college and university students in a retention program that features tutoring, counseling, and career planning support. Performance measures will include high school graduation rates and rate of enrollment in post-secondary education. NCA/NCF
