Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $44,717)

Youth UpRising (YU) will address the needs of at-risk, school-aged individuals, age 13 through 17, from low-income neighborhoods in East Oakland, where homicide and violent crime rates are among the highest in the nation. In order to divert youth from high risk behaviors YU will provide comprehensive, integrated programming designed to help young people develop their innate creativity and curiosity, expand their sense of well-being and confidence, and acquire the skills needed to make positive contributions to society. YU will use OJJDP funding to expand its outreach and community engagement efforts over a twelve month period. These efforts will take the form of street-level outreach teams, public events and celebrations, civic participation on government boards and commissions, and house-produced public awareness campaigns. YU's outreach and community engagement efforts will be measured quantitatively through number of individuals served and rate of recidivism for program participants. NCA/NCF
