Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $268,305)

The South Sumter Resource Center in Sumter County will implement the VISA Program (Valuable Improvement in Student Achievement) for students between the ages of 12 to 17 who have been expelled or are on probation. This program will provide a comprehensive, intensive community based alternative education program for 180 students during both the summer and school sessions. The VISA program will focus on reducing expulsions, recidivism, and strengthening the family structure. A specific family strengthening project will include the 'Rites of Passage into Responsible Productive Adulthood.' This project will include an awareness campaign and advocacy for African American Males to be portrayed in a positive light. The VISA program will report performance measures that include improved school attendance and change in number of arrests. NCA/NCF
