Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $201,228)

The Safe Place program addresses the immediate physical and emotional needs of at-risk youth, while developing a longer term course of action to resolve the problem by creating locations in the community where youth can easily access immediate help and safety. This project will create a national awareness initiative entitled Building a Safety Net for Youth. The goal of the project is to reach four million young people and to make them aware of the services available through Safe Place runaway shelters and Safe Place community locations. The project will increase knowledge of issues related to the dangers associated with being a disconnected or homeless youth, increase knowledge of the availability of helping resources for at-risk youth and minimize status or other offenses, decreasing potential victimization of youth.
