Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $44,717)

The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition members seek social, economic, environmental, and racial justice through community organizing that utilizes non-violent confrontation, negotiation, and principled compromise. The Sistas and Brothas United Youth Leadership and Tutoring Program provides: 1) positive alternatives to gang and drug cultures for youth living in the Northwest Bronx by engaging them in civic leadership activities; and 2) an effective academic support program for high school students in the Northwest Bronx. The civic leadership program develops the capacity of teenagers to research and identify issues of juvenile delinquency and high school failure and then implement policy campaigns. The academic support program provides high quality peer tutoring, mentoring, Regents Exam preparation, and support for college enrollment to 100 teenagers each year. NCA/NCF
