Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $290,663)

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic's (RFB&D) 'Learning Through Listening' will focus on enhancing the effectiveness of special education programs for at-risk students with learning disabilities in the Greater Boston metropolitan area through the optimal integration of accessible educational materials, training and technical assistance. The project will improve the educational systems and tools available for use by the students and those individuals responsible for the education of students who are certified to have a learning disability. The project will address at-risk behaviors that research has shown to be indicators of potential juvenile delinquency, including poor reading skills, poor academic performance, increased rates of truancy and dropout, and decreased rates of graduation. Project measures and evaluations will include the number of students utilizing the Learning Through Listening program, the number of program materials developed, the number and frequency of training, instruction activities conducted, and the percentage of membership renewals. Also, the project will report on the frequency of collaboration with Weed and Seed project members, and the successful conversions for those programs that have RFB&D's older and now obsolete technology (analog audiocassette equipment) to digital listening devices and programs.
