Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $447,174)
Girls Inc. empowers all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The goal of Girls Inc. is to reach all girls, but the organization recognizes that girls in at-risk communities have a particular need for programs. Of those they serve, 70 percent are girls of color and 66 percent come from families earning $25,000 or less. More than half are from single-parent households, most of which are headed by women. Girls Inc. is distinguished by its commitment of time and resources to determine the best response to the issues that girls face, creating innovative and relevant programs that work. Girls Inc. works with local affiliates to develop, test, implement, and evaluate research-based, developmentally appropriate programs that help girls chart a course for success. Through the proposed project, Girls Inc. will expand programming that works to prevent youth violence and obesity. They will also increase the number of Girls Inc. affiliate organizations and the number of girls served by existing affiliates throughout the United States. NCA/NCF
