Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $44,717)

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (MAP) will expand its services to delinquent youth in residential or in home placement at St. Gabriel's Hall and Glen Mills Schools and VisonQuest in Home Detention. In addition, MAP will partner with Temple University's Criminal Justice Department to provide its programming on site to a subset of young men recently out of placement. The purpose will be to expose youth to college and education, provide a mentor, and help them to make responsible decisions. MAP's programs are designed to use the collaborative mural making process to teach valuable life and job skills like conflict resolution, personal responsibility, community engagement and problem solving. MAP will measure its success by tracking whether or not youth reoffend or are rearrested; youth attendance; youth involvement in required reintegration activities; youth enrollment in other MAP programs, and program attendance and community service hours completed.
