Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)

In 2002, Allegheny County's Office of Children, Youth and Families funded the creation of Gwen's Girls to address the need for gender-specific services for at-risk girls in Allegheny County. Gwen's Girls' mission is to empower girls, ages 8-18, to have productive futures through holistic, gender-specific programs, education and experiences. The agency provides a continuum of care based on a girl's chronological and developmental needs. To reduce the likelihood of delinquency, Gwen's Girls will provide gender-specific prevention programs to girls by providing: 1) Care Management services to 30 'at-risk' girls who will be referred by the Mon Valley Office of Children, Youth and Families, along with bi-weekly workshops and groups of at least 25 open to area high schools for 16 months and 2) School-Based Prevention Services to at least 100 girls, in grades 3 to 8, through a 12-week session. The progress will be measured through assessments, session attendance, attitude and behavior changes, pre/post tests, school progress reports, etc. for outcomes using a 16-month period. NCA/NCF
