Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)

El Centro de Accion Social (El Centro) will provide educational and social integration programs that build better lives for the Latino low-income youth and families in the greater Pasadena area. Specifically, the Appropriations funding will allow over 300 predominantly low-income Latino youth, K-12, to have academic tutoring in English, math and language arts and provide leadership development that expands understanding of life options. Also we will provide mentorship opportunities for our at risk students that attend Pasadena Unified School District. These are solid education programs that help at risk youth to stay away from delinquent acvities (gang involvement) by staying in school, attending classes, participating in Summer School in the Park, and by learning from positive adult role models/mentors. The Program Director will help to steer our youth away from the allure of gangs. We will also provide a scholarship for our students to attend Pasadena City College or other trade technical colleges or universities. NCA/NCF
